Asteroid (16666) Liroma

Named in honour of the Meier family, amateur astronomers who live near Ottawa, Ontario. Linda (b. 1950-) is an active observer. Between 1978 and 1984, Rolf (1953-07-24 – 2016-06-26) discovered four comets and has recently built an observatory. Son Matthew (b. 1985-) has joined the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Ottawa Centre. Beyond being a well-respected member of the RASC Ottawa Centre, Rolf was also a highly regarded member of the world-wide astronomical community. Rolf epitomized the dedicated amateur astronomer, one who strove for excellence and rigor in his endeavors. In particular, Rolf was best known as a comet hunter. His discovery of Comet C/1987 H1 (Meier) made him the first astronomer to discover a comet from Canadian soil. However, he was also an extraordinarily capable planetary observer, producing magnificent planetary astrophotographs. His untimely death due to an aggressive form glioblastoma was a shock to the community.
