Asteroid (246913) Slocum

Joshua Slocum (1844–1909?) was the first person to circumnavigate the world alone. He sailed Spray, his rebuilt sloop, from Boston in April 1895, and returned three years later after a 74000-km journey. His book 'Sailing Alone Around the World' is a first-hand account of his remarkable voyage. Slocum was born in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. He left home as a teen for a life at sea as a merchant sailor. Later he became a captain and owner of several sailing ships. One of his stops in his around the world voyage was his boyhood home of Briar Island, NS. He was presumed lost at sea with Spray during a voyage he began in November 1909.
