Join Jean Dupuis, PhD. and Nathalie Ouellette to learn more about the James Webb Space Telescope and Canada's role in this exciting project.

Jean Dupuis, Ph.D., is a senior mission scientist in space astronomy at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). He is currently the CSA mission scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope and the scientific authority on several studies for future space astronomy missions being considered by CSA. He is working in close collaboration with a community of scientists and engineers across Canada to help them meet their science objectives and prepare for future space astronomy missions. After receiving his Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal (1991), he spent many years in the United States working at Dartmouth College, at the University of California at Berkeley and at Johns Hopkins University as a scientist for space astronomy missions before returning to Canada in 2005 to join the CSA.

Nathalie Ouellette is an astrophysicist and passionate about science communication. She received her Ph.D. in astrophysics from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 2016. Her research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies, particularly those found in groups and clusters. In addition to being an active researcher, she is frequently featured in the media talking about astronomy to the general public. She is currently the coordinator of the Exoplanet Research Institute at the Université de Montréal and the scientific coordinator for the James Webb Space Telescope in Canada.

RASC Sunshine Coast: Probing the Epoch of Reionization

Event Date:
Friday, November 12, 2021 - 22:00 to 23:30 EST

Probing the Epoch of Reionization with the Simons Observatory

Presented by Margaret Ikape

RASC Sunshine Coast Centre

Abstract: Astronomers are currently trying to understand some gaps in our knowledge of the history of the universe, and I am interested in filling in the blanks in the Epoch of reionization. Using computer simulations, and then later data from the Simons Observatory, I’ll discuss how we work towards understanding some fundamental questions about the epoch of reionization, like how big the first stars were and how long it took the universe to reionize.

Join the talk on Friday Novemeber 12, 2021 @ 7:00 PM CDT (10:00 pm EDT)

Speaker Series Fall 2021: Exoplanet Hunting From Home

Event Date:
Thursday, November 25, 2021 - 19:00 to 21:00 EST

Exoplanet hunting from home

Presented by Laurie Sibbald

RASC National & SkyNews

Since confirmation of the first exoplanet detection in 1992, humans have found almost 5,000 exoplanets orbiting distant stars — and detecting them is possible with the same equipment as used in backyard astrophotography.

Co-hosted by RASC outreach assistant Samantha Jewett and SkyNews editor-in-chief Allendria Brunjes, learn how Laurie Sibbald began collecting photometry data from suburbia indicating exoplanets. All the skills were developed by doing deep space imaging using some of the excellent software tools and equipment available to consumers. The data quality is high enough to contribute to exoplanet research databases that scientists are using to improve our understanding of worlds outside of our Solar System.

This talk is on November 25, 2021 @ 7 pm EST
