Dora Russell (1913-1986) spearheaded the founding the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's St. John's Centre in Newfoundland in 1965, then served a total of four years as Centre President. She mentored many of the generation of young astronomers there in the 1970s. In 1977, Russell received the RASC Service Award and also a Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. She wrote a weekly astronomy column in the St. John's Evening Telegram.
