- Stellarium
Explore the night sky for free. Amateur astronomers use this to plan their stargazing and astrophotography evenings!
- Loss of the Night
This app lets you become a citizen scientist to measure light pollution in your area. There is also a website called My Sky at Night for visualizing your data.
- Orbit
Play with gravity and see if you can get planets to orbit black holes. Super fun and free! This app is only available for Android devices.
- Sky Safari 6
The free version lets you explore the night sky on your phone. If you pay, it'll also control your telescope for you!
- Star Chart and SkyMap
Both of these apps act as planetariums for your phone. If your phone has a built-in compass, both apps will calibrate to the Earth's magnetic field. Then you can point your phone at the sky and the app will tell you what you're looking at!
