National Star Party – Saturday, September 15, 2018
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the origin of The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, the RASC is sponsoring a National Star Party.
On the evening of Saturday, September 15, 2018, RASC centres from coast to coast to coast will hold public star par- ties for the Canadian public. If the weather is clear, visitors will be able to observe a first quarter Moon and the planets Mars, Saturn and Jupiter through telescopes.
RASC members will set up their telescopes to give guests clear views of these three beautiful planets plus the rugged surface of the Moon. The clouds of Jupiter will be easily visible as will four of Jupiter’s large “Galilean” moons. Saturn is always a favourite with its spectacular ring system. Mars is especially close to the Earth this year and should show markings and a polar cap in telescopes.
The events are free and will begin after sunset (approximately 7:30 pm). We hope that we can make this National Star Party a success and bring astronomy to thousands of Canadians.
