PAUL MARMET (1932-2005) has had a distinguished career as a physicist. mainly at Université Laval until 1984, and since then at the Herzberg Institute for Astrophysics and the University of Ottawa. He was appointed to the first Associate Committee on Astronomy of the National Research Council in 1971 and played an important role in negotiations for the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Among the several prestigious awards he has received, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1981.
From 1966 on, he was an active member of the Quebec Centre, as a telescope-maker, observer and frequent speaker at meetings. Dr. Marmet led the renaissance of the Quebec Centre in 1966 and served terms as President and Vice-President during the years 1966-71. He was largely responsible for restoring the meetings, the Centre newsletter, and the observing nights to a regular schedule. He was of great assistance to the Centre in making calculations for the Almanach-Graphique, for comet ephemerides, eclipses and grazing occultations and edited the French language articles for the National Newsletter from 1977-82. He received the RASC Service Award in 1977.
