98 411 Brixton Avenue St. Lambert, P.Q. January 8, 1964 Dear Mr. Gallant, The National Office of the R.A.S.C. informs me that you have requested information on comets visible during 1964. I regret that I have very little information on the visibility of periodic comets during 1964 at this time. I depend on the "Periodic Comets" section in the Handbook of the British Astronomical Association for my information, but neither I nor my friends in Montreal have received copies of the 1964 issue as yet. As far as I know, no naked-eye comets are scheduled to appear during 1964, although Comet Encke may be visible in small telescopes later in the year. Since new comes may appear at any time, the "Comet and Nova Section" has been formed to encourage observers to search for new objects and to make useful observations when one is found. Enclosed is a copy of C & N Form #1 explaining this programme. If you would care to take part, please let me know and I will send you report and instruction forms. I send out announcements whenever a bright new object becomes visible, and I have added your name to my mailing list. Good observing, Jim Low National Coordinator Comet and Nova Section Royal Astronomical Society of Canada
