Asteroid (22378) Gaherty

Geoff Gaherty (1941-2016) was an amateur astronomer who wrote about observing and won the Chant Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 2008. Geoff earned a B.Sc. from McGill University in mathematics and physics in 1964, an M.A. from the University of Toronto in anthropology in 1966 and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto also in anthropology in 1970. An obituary for Geoff is here. Name suggested by Robert and Peter Jedicke.

Asteroid (129973) Michaeldaly

Michael Daly (b. 1965) is a professor of planetary science at York University and is the lead scientist for the OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter. Prior to this, he was the lead engineer for the development of Phoenix MET, Canada’s first instruments to operate on the surface of Mars.
