Henry Spencer (b. 1955) is a Canadian computer scientist and small-satellite engineer. He has been a pioneer of open-source software, including C News and the "regex" pattern-matching library. He is also the keeper of the oldest surviving Usenet archives and the software architect for the MOST astronomy satellite.

David Dunlap's 150th Birthday

150 years ago today, October 13th 1862, was the birthdate of David Alexander Dunlap, who is memorialized in several locations around Toronto. Both Mr. Dunlap and his wife, Jessie Donalda Bell, were born in Pembroke, Ontario. Mr. Dunlap graduated as a lawyer from Osgoode Hall, and he practiced in Mattawa. His big break was when two of his colleagues, the Timmins brothers who ran the Mattawa general store, made a deal in 1903 with a man named LaRose for a mining opportunity in what later became the Town of Cobalt.

Asteroid (246913) Slocum

Joshua Slocum (1844–1909?) was the first person to circumnavigate the world alone. He sailed Spray, his rebuilt sloop, from Boston in April 1895, and returned three years later after a 74000-km journey. His book 'Sailing Alone Around the World' is a first-hand account of his remarkable voyage. Slocum was born in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. He left home as a teen for a life at sea as a merchant sailor. Later he became a captain and owner of several sailing ships. One of his stops in his around the world voyage was his boyhood home of Briar Island, NS.
