THE GREAT LEONID METEOR STORM OF 1966

The Leonids have done it again!  With practically all of Canada clouded out, and with
many observers in the United States giving up too early, this unpredictable shower struck
with the greatest intensity since 1833. In the western U.S., observers persevering after

                         VARIABLE STAR SECTION


The variable star observers among the R.A.S.C. members have just completed
their most successful year in the history of our Society. Not only have
more observations been made, but more observers than ever before have con-
tributed to this impressive total.

On an international scale, variable star observing is mushrooming. Several

ANNOUNCEMENT: Following the retirement of Geoffrey Gaherty as National Co-ordinator of
the Planetary Section for the National Observing Program, Miss Isabel Williamson asked
me to assume this position. The program as established by Mr. Gaherty will be con-
tinued. Information and assistance in observational activities will be made avail-

                             LUNAR OCCULTATIONS SECTION


This bulletin is one of several to be issued reporting the activities of the Lunar
Occultations Section. It is hoped that through this bulletin a number of Centres
will be encouraged to participate in this fascinating and useful program. Wherever
a Centre has not already done so, I would ask that the name of a member be submitted

Meteor observing is a field in which amateurs without specialized equipment can make
an important contribution. The prime requirements are enthusiasm, knowledge of the
constellations, and a willingness to stay awake when the majority of citizens are

At the Society's General Assembly in Winnipeg in May 1966, I had the
honour of being appointed National Co-ordinator of the Instrumentation
Section.


To the best of my knowledge, this is a category; therefore,
records or information as to type or numbers of instruments in use
by members of the R.A.S.C. are not available.


I would like to suggest that each Centre appoint a member to keep

I'd better start this news-letter off by apologizing to all active and potential
meteor observers in general, and to kiss Isabel K. Williamson, the National
Chairman of the Standing Committee on Observational Activities in particular,
for the embarrassed silence of this Section since I was appointed Co-ordinator.

The Society's annual General Assembly affords our Committee the rare opportunity of
meeting in person instead of by correspondence. The meeting held at the General
Assembly in Winnipeg was a good one. Although not all members were present, it was
