To obtain more information from our aurora observers and to establish an R.A.S.C. auroral
data file, this bulletin describes two stumnary forms. These can easily be duplicated
by Centres or individual observers and are intended as a supplenent to, not a replacement
for, the present N.R.C. aurora report form.

The Starting Committee on Observational Activities is interested in expanding the present
visual survey of aurora borealis (northern lights) in the skies over Canada. Many in-
dividual members of the R.A.S.C. are currently reporting their observations of aurora to

In this, my first bulletin as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Observational Activities,
it seems appropriate to restate the purpose of the Committee and to review the progress that
has been made to date.

The Committee has three main objectives:-

   1. To keep members informed of the observational activities of all Centres.

Across the country, interest has centred on the Comet Ikeya-Seki; a great deal of press
and radio coverage has been given to this celestial object but it has remained elusive for
most Canadian observers. Jim Low, Co-ordinator of the Comet and Nova Section, issued
two timely announcements giving the ephemeris. We have learned of only two sightings of
this ocenet by our members Ä Mr. Hugh Maclean of Niagara Falls Centre, and Mr. F. Schneider
of the Hamilton Centre.

The recent announcement by the Prime Minister of Canada that the proposed 150" reflecting
telescope would become a reality made front page headlines across the country. This will
be called the Queen Elizabeth II Observatory, to commemorate the visit of Her Majesty to
Canada in 1964. A site has been choeen on Mount Kobau, not far south of Pentioton, B.C.,
and construction of the telescope and buildings will take about 7 years to canplete. A

Announcement

    Upon the recent retirement of the Lunar Co-ordinator, Mr. R.R. Thompson, President
of the Toronto Centre, the writer was asked by Mr. Vent Ramsay, as Chairman of the
National Committee on Observational Activities, to assume this position.

    Since the introductory bulletin last year, four of the sixteen R.A.s.C. Centres
have indicated a desire to co-operate in the national auroral observing programme.
The four local recorders are as follows:-

Bulletin No 5                                                          February 8, 1963.

Since the last Bulletin was published, there has been much activity in the Planetary
Section. Observations have been received from the Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal, Niagara
Falls, Ottawa, Toronto, and Windsor Centres, as well as from C. H. Clark of Lethbridge,
Alta, and R. W. Gordon of Pen Argyl, Pa, U.S.A. Some of these observations are discussed
