RASC Ottawa: Monthly Meeting

Event Date:
Friday, June 3, 2022 - 19:30 to 21:30 EDT

Monthly Meeting

RASC Ottawa

What better way to celebrate Chile and Peru signing the Treaty of Lima that finally resolved their border dispute from the War of the Pacific (1879–83) in which Chile kept Arica and Peru regained Tacna? Seriously. Join us for the RASC Ottawa Centre Zoom-inar Friday 3 June 07:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada).

Anyone looking to look out from this Earth is welcome.

Pre-register for this Zoom webinar (unless you are presenting a talk or observation) HERE!

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

NOTE:  If you are presenting an observation you then will be sent a unique link (from Chris Teron) to join as a panellist and do not need to register.

Our very serious science-oriented agenda could include:

Mick Wilson – Introduction and northern-hemisphere bashing

Mick Wilson - Ottawa Skies for June

Nathalie Oullette - Dark Matter and Galaxy Evolution

BioBreak and bio-degradable Astro-trivia

Bob Olson - The Cassinis and the Establishment of Modern France

Andrea Girones Introduction to Milky Way Astrophotography

Observation Reports - generally reliable

Monthly Observing Challenges

Announcements and Free Beer (and, yes, that was a joke from the last four months and counting, but nobody got it)

Abstract: Gravitational waves, tiny ripples in the fabric of spacetime, allow us to sense systems we can't usually see with telescopes, including distant black hole collisions and the interior of nearby exploding stars. Where do these gravitational waves come from? How do we measure them? What can they teach us about the Universe that we can't learn with light alone?

Speaker bio: Dr. Jess McIver is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia, and the Canada Research Chair in Gravitational Wave Astrophysics. She leads the UBC gravitational-wave astrophysics group, the UBC LIGO group, and the UBC-TRIUMF LISA group. She specializes in characterization of the Advanced LIGO detectors and astrophysical gravitational-wave data analysis.
