Abstract: Astronomers are currently trying to understand some gaps in our knowledge of the history of the universe, and Margaret Ikape is interested in filling in the blanks in the epoch of reionization. Using computer simulations, and then later data from the Simons Observatory, she’ll discuss how we work towards understanding some fundamental questions about the epoch of reionization, like how big the first stars were and how long it took the universe to reionize.

Speaker bio: Margaret Ikape is a PhD candidate in the department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Toronto. She was born in Nigeria, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy. She completed a Masters degree in Mathematical sciences at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, AIMS, Cameroon and another masters degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Toronto before beginning PhD studies in Toronto. Her interest in astronomy started at a very young age and that interest has been sustained by the numerous unanswered questions about the universe. Her current work is to try to understand the nature of the early universe using simulations and data from upcoming telescopes.
