Eclipse 2024

2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8th 2024, North America will be treated to a total solar eclipse! This will be the last total solar eclipse in Canada until 2044, so this is your best opportunity to see this incredible astronomical phenomenon without having to travel too far.

We are maintaining a list of events and resources for this eclipse. If you have information to add, please contact the Eclipse Task Force.

If you are travelling to, or within, the path of totality to view the total solar eclipse, it is highly recommended that you arrive in place 24-48 hours in advance of the eclipse, and stay after the eclipse for an additional night, due to expected crowds and traffic.

Check out Eclipse2024.org or Timeanddate.com for details on this eclipse's path.

Eclipse Glasses

Glasses will be available for purchase in person at the RASC National Office (489 College St, Suite 203) from March 25th to 28th and again from April 1st to April 5th, cash only, tax included, $10 per pair, $15 for 2 and $30 for 5, while supplies last. Call the Society Office (416-924-7973) and listen to the recorded message for a daily update on remaining stock.

Up-to-date information about Canadian ISO-certified resellers can also be found in Discover The Universe's eclipse glasses document.

Many events and some larger entities (libraries, cities, school districts) are also giving out free glasses.

Eclipses and Eye Safety

Never look directly at the Sun without using protective filters that comply with the ISO 12312-2: 2015 standard. Even when almost the entire Sun is covered by the Moon, light from the remaining visible crescent Sun is intense enough to cause a retinal injury. Solar eclipse viewers and glasses are designed to give a safe comfortable view of the partly eclipsed Sun. Sunglasses (even multiple pairs), smoked glass and space blankets are not safe substitutes.

Solar eclipse viewers and glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2: 2015 standard must have labels to that effect. The manufacturer or distributor must be able to provide proof of compliance on request.

You can remove solar viewers and look directly at an eclipse only during totality (when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun) and if you are in the path of totality. Totality only spans a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on where you are located in the path of totality.

To learn more about eye safety when viewing a solar eclipse, please check out this webpage from the American Astronomical Society.
