Abstract: Canada is at the forefront of space research and innovation. We often hear about the beginning of space missions, followed by the results and new discoveries years later, but we seldom hear of what goes on in between. Julie Claveau will talk about Canada’s role and contributions in the James Webb Space Telescope mission, as well as the mission’ science objectives. She will conclude by giving a peek into the lengthy process of getting a mission ready for launch, including her role as Deputy Mission Manager.
Speaker bio: Julie Claveau graduated with a degree in Physics and Astronomy and is currently Program Officer for smartEarth at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). As an advocate for diversity and inclusion, she is also Co-Chair of the CSA’s Women in STEM committee. Her previous roles include Program Scientist in Space Astronomy where she acted as Deputy Mission Manager for the James Webb Space Telescope, Earth Observation Mission Planner for the RADARSAT-2 mission and Project Manager for the RADARSAT-1 Open Data project. She also worked in military operations as Naval Warfare officer for the Canadian Navy and in public administration. She loves talking about space, sharing her story and mentoring young professionals. She currently supports organizations like Skype a Scientist, SEDs Canada and Zenith Pathways. She is also involved with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs space4women initiative. Her passion for space started at a young age, stargazing for hours, which then followed with a passion with the physics of space and our place in the universe.

Event Date: Friday, October 14, 2022 - 19:30 to 21:30 EDT Monthly Meeting
RASC Ottawa
Can it possibly be true that our Sun loses 30,000 blue whales' worth of mass every second... and that it's been doing that for billions of years? How many whales is that, anyway?
One way to know for sure is to join us for the RASC Ottawa Centre Zoom-inar Friday 14 October 7:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada). I keep offering free beer at the end of these things but no-one has taken me up on it yet.
Anyone looking to look out from this Earth is welcome.
Pre-register for this Zoom webinar (unless you are presenting a talk or observation) at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/1916628536058/WN_ZgJSNQtxQsGeQS...
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
NOTE: If you are presenting an observation you will then be sent a unique link (from Chris Teron) to join as a panellist and do not need to register.
Our very serious science-oriented agenda could include
- Mick Wilson – Introduction
- Jesse Rogerson and Cassandra Marion (CASM) – Exoplanet Naming Contest
- Dave Chisholm - Ottawa Skies for October
- Andrea Girones - Tips for Photographing the November lunar eclipse
- BioBreak and bio-degradable Astro-trivia
- Tony Peterson - Unipolar Solar Magnetic Fields
- Observation Reports - mostly harmless, and safe for children
- Monthly Observing Challenges
- Announcements and Talent Show
