Speaker
On 31 Oct, 2022 By outreach@rasc.ca
Event Date: Thursday, November 3, 2022 - 19:30 to 21:30 EDT Science with the RASC Remote Telescope
Presented by Rick Wagner
RASC Hamilton
Thursday, November 3rd, 2022 @ 19:30 ET
Rick has been a member of the RASC for 49 years, holding many positions including president of the Ottawa and Kingston Centres, member of National Council for many years, founding chair of the national Observing Committee, and Science Lead for the RASC remote telescope in California. He was awarded the Centre Merit award by Ottawa Centre and the national Service Award . Rick has about a dozen telescopes but only 5 or 6 get used on a regular basis. Most frequently used are the Paul Boltwood 40cm Newtonian and a Meade 25cm Schmidt-Newtonian, almost exclusively for photometry.
Rick's interests in astronomy cover many fields: He has observed or imaged over a hundred comets, measured the rotation periods of asteroids, imaged Trans-Neptunian objects and gamma ray burst afterglows, timed exo-planet transits and completed the Williamson Lunar Certificate, the Lunar 1000 Challenge, the Finest NGC certificate and all three AstroImaging Certificates. But photometry has been Rick's focus since building his first observatory in 2007, especially RR Lyrae and high amplitude Delta Scuti stars with over 200,000 images. He continues to work at improving the quality of his photometry, developing new observing techniques, writing scripts to reduce the workload and building yet another telescope to collect more and better data.

Astronomical Research at the Undergraduate Level
Presented by Maheen Hemani
RASC Toronto and the David Dunlap Observatory
Wednesday, November 12 @ 6:30 PM ET, online
Join us, from the comfort of your home! This program will feature live-stream views from the DDO's 74-Inch telescope (Weather permitting). Explore breaking news from space and current research into what lies beyond our home planet! Each night, we’ll take a virtual tour of the DDO, hear from our speakers about their own amazing space research, and ask them all our questions about what they know and what they’re discovering. Only one registration per household is required. Deadline to register for this program is Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at 4pm ET. Prior to the start of the program you will be emailed information on the virtual program links and any specific information relating to your program.
Research is one of the most important parts of an astronomy-based career, from observing heavenly bodies to collecting, reducing, and processing data. Maheen will be talking about her experience with astronomical research at the undergraduate level at York University, as well as the specific work performed by the Allan I. Carswell Observatory on campus. This includes research on variable stars as well as observational astronomy. If you are considering studying astronomy in university, this is a talk you will not want to miss!
Maheen was fascinated with astronomy since she was very young, however, she found it was not very common for schools to teach much about the subject at the time. She attended several STEM programs in her home country of Pakistan to learn more about the field and get involved with observational amateur astronomy. By the time Maheen began her studies at York University in 2020, she had already performed some research in nuclear physics. However, it was only at York that she began to acquire proper experience with astronomical research, which involved determining solar rotation periods, classifying galaxies, and detecting exoplanets. She has worked at York University's Allan I Carswell Observatory for roughly one year, where she learned how to operate the 1-meter telescope - the largest on any Canadian university campus - and assisted in its ongoing research on variable stars. She expects to complete her degree in 2024.

On 02 Nov, 2022 By hotair@computer...
Event Date: Monday, November 28, 2022 - 20:00 to 21:30 EST Webinar on Stellarium
What is Stellarium anyway? What can it do? How is it to use? What does it look like? Can it drive a telescope mount? Is it really free? Attend the webinar to find out.
This online dedicated webinar is meant to show what the Stellarium planetarium software can do. The free computer application for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux is surprisingly rich and powerful. We'll briefly show some of the commonly-used features and then take questions, in a Q&A period afterwards. We will also quickly show the mobile app which is available for Android and iOS devices.
This is a informational webinar aimed at people interested in the Stellarium software, either completely new to the software, or with some limited exposure. I.e. beginners. This is a product demonstration.
