Starfest 2011 – Two Clear Nights!

The Toronto Centre sent a strong contingent to the 30th anniversary edition of Starfest held near Mount Forest, ON from August 26-28th. This year's event featured an excellent turnout, the usual tornadic activity as well as some excellent guest speakers including Rocky Kolb from the University of Chicago (who knew that black holes and United Airlines had so much in common?) and our own Randy Attwood, Kerry Ann Lecky Hepburn and Terence Dickinson.

Honorary Member: Dra. Julieta Fierro Gossman

Dra. Julieta Fierro, "the Carl Sagan of Mexico", is a professor, Institute of Astronomy, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), and one of the world's foremost communicators of astronomy. Her graduate degree was in astronomy, and she teaches regularly at UNAM, and has carried out research on interstellar matter.

Georges-Achille van Biesbroeck (January 21, 1880 – February 23, 1974) was a Belgian-American astronomer. He worked at observatories in Belgium, Germany and the United States. He specialized in the observation of double stars, asteroids and comets. He is notable for his long career as an observational astronomer.
